LADEN WITH OPPRESSIVE GRIEF

Laden with oppressive grief,
To the Lord the sinner flies
There alone he gains relief,
Hence his consolations rise.

Bowing at the sacred throne,
He laments his wretched case ;
Humbly owns himself undone,
Lost without recovering grace.

God beholds his broken heart,
Listens to his earnest cries ;
Bids his sorrows all depart,
Softly wipes his weeping eyes.

Present peace and future bliss,
From true godly sorrow flow ;
None shall e’er the harvest miss,
Who their seed in sadness sow.

PILGRIM SONG

On, O beloved children,
The evening is at hand,
And desolate and fearful
The solitary land.
Take heart! the rest eternal
Awaits our weary feet;
From strength to strength press onwards,
The end, how passing sweet!

Lo, we can tread rejoicing
The narrow pilgrim road;
We know the voice that calls us,
We know our faithful God.
Come, children, on to glory!
With every face set fast
Towards the golden towers
Where we shall rest at last.

It was with voice of singing
We left the land of night,
To pass in glorious music
Far onward out of sight.
O children, was it sorrow?
Though thousand worlds be lost,
Our eyes have looked on Jesus,
And thus we count the cost.

TRUST AND OBEY

When we walk with the Lord
In the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will
He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.

Trust and obey
for there's no other way
To be happy in Jesus
but to trust and obey.

Not a shadow can rise,
Not a cloud in the skies,
But His smile quickly drives it away;
Not a doubt nor a fear,
Not a sigh nor a tear,
Can abide while we trust and obey.

HOW GRACIOUS

How gracious and how wise
Is our chastising God!
And O! how rich the blessings are,
That blossom from his rod!

He lifts it up on high
With pity in his heart,
That every stroke his children feel
May grace and peace impart.

Our Father, we consent
To discipline divine;
And bless the pains that make our souls
Still more completely thine.

PLANTED BY GOD'S RIGHT HAND

Planted by God’s right hand,
Where living waters flow,
Like stately trees, believers stand,
In comely orders grow.

Their fruits know no decay,
Their leaf shall never fade;
The lord’s their keeper night and day,
And foes shall ne’er invade.

Their proper growth attained,
He will these plants remove,
To Canaan’s rich and fertile land,
And genial climes above.

Benjamin Beddome

HAVE FAITH IN GOD

Have faith in God, my heart,
Trust and be unafraid;
God will fulfill in every part
Each promise He has made.

Have faith in God, my mind,
Though oft Thy light burns low;
God's mercy holds a wiser plan
Than Thou canst fully know.

SEEDS OF PROMISE

Oh, scatter seeds of loving deeds
Along the fertile fields;
For grain will grow
from what you sow,
And fruitful harvest yield.

Then day by day,
along your way,
The seeds of promise cast,
That ripened grain
from hill and plain
Be gathered home
at last.

Though sown in tears through
weary years,
The seed will surely live;
Though great the cost,
it is not lost,
For God will fruitage give.

ONWARD CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS

Onward! Christian soldiers,
Marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus
Going on before!
Christ, the royal Master,
Leads against the foe;
Forward into battle,
See, His banners go!

Onward, Christian soldiers,
Marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus
Going on before.

At the name of Jesus

Satan’s host doth flee;
On then, Christian soldiers,
On to victory!
Hell’s foundations quiver
At the shout of praise;
Brothers, lift your voices;
Loud your anthems raise:
